Indigenous Identity and Resistance : Researching the Diversity of Knowledge order quantity

NZ$ 52.00 each
Paperback
Author: Brendan Hokowhitu, Poia Rewi, Michael Reilly, Anna Petersen, Nathalie Kermoal, Isabel Altamirano-Jimenez & Chris Andersen (editors)
In Stock: 1
Indigenous Identity and Resistance brings together the work of Indigenous Studies scholars working in Canada, New Zealand and the Pacific in research conversations that transcend the imperial boundaries of the colonial nations in which they are located. Their lucid, accessible, and thought-provoking essays provide a critical understanding of the ways in which Indigenous peoples are rearticulating their histories, knowledges, and the Indigenous self. Hana O'Regan discusses a programme of language regeneration initiated by members of her iwi, Kai Tahu. Chris Andersen describes the power of Canada's colonial nation-state in constructing categories of indigeneity. Brendan Hokowhitu problematises the common discourses underpinning Indigenous resistance. Janine Hayward compares Indigenous political representation in Canada and New Zealand. This is a snapshot of the forward-looking research in this reader. Taken together, it heralds a ... more

The Gold Baron : Central Otago's mining entrepreneur order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 40.00 each
Paperback
Author: John McCraw
In Stock: 1
This is the story of John Ewing, gold mining entrepreneur and at one time in the 1890s, New Zealand’s wealthiest person.
Ewing was a gold mining leader who introduced many technological advances onto the Otago goldfields that greatly extended the life of gold mining in that province. The sluicing elevator was one such innovation that he brought from the United States and put into use in several places across Otago including St Bathans where he mostly resided. As government advisor on gold mining he was highly influential, and at his peak had mining interests spread across southern New Zealand in many companies and ventures.
Unfortunately, as gold became harder to mine economically, and banks were under financial pressure, he had extended himself too far and was declared bankrupt. From this set-back he never recovered although he fought hard to clear his name and strike it rich one more time.
McCraw’s book brings this unsung ... more

Board Book
Author: Bruce McAllister
In Stock: 1
In his seventh aviation history book, Bruce McAllister brings together the largest collection of photographs of the world's most legendary aircraft - the DC-3. The book's release is timed to the aircraft's 75th anniversary - hundreds of DC-3s are still in service today, almost 75 years after the first one rolled off the production line in 1935. With seventeen chapters covering many of the civilian and military operations in which the DC-3 has participated, McAllister has gathered some 250 high quality photographs from around the world. A rich history surrounds the DC-3. In the 1930s, the DC-3 - as the aircraft of choice for the world's major air carriers - helped spur the tremendous growth in airline travel. In World War II, General Dwight D Eisenhower identified the DC-3/C-47 as one of the keys to the Allies' victory. The aircraft even served as a potent gunship in the Vietnam conflict. This book captures this history, bringing this ... more

On The Wings Of History : Volume One The Beginning Of The Vintage Aviator Collection order quantity

NZ$ 25.00 each
Paperback
Author: Allan Udy & Alex Mitchell
In Stock: 1
Over the past two decades the Second World War fighter aircraft of the Alpine Fighter Collection have been the mainstay of the world renown Warbirds Over Wanaka airshows. What many enthusiasts don't know (yet) is that for the past ten years there has been a collection of even older warbird aircraft quietly taking shape elsewhere in New Zealand.

Over the past decade The Vintage Aviator Ltd (TVAL) has been steadily growing its collection of fighter aircraft from the First World War, to the extent that this book documents over 48 different aircraft and colour schemes drawn from over two dozen different World War One types, which are, or have been seen here in New Zealand.

For readers unfamiliar with the aircraft from the dawn of military aviation, this book also includes a brief summary of the first 15 years of aviation, and then details the activities of the TVAL aircraft based at Omaka and Hood Aerodromes in New Zealand. ... more

The Airplane: How Ideas Gave Us Wings order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 28.00 each
Paperback
Author: Jay Spenser
In Stock: 0
The inside story of how people invented and refined the airplane.

Who were aviation's dreamers and from where did they draw their inspiration? What lessons did inventors learn from birds, insects, marine mammals, and fish that helped us fly? How did the bicycle lead to the airplane, and hot water heaters to metal fuselages? And who figured out how to fly without seeing the ground, setting the stage for scheduled airline services in all weather conditions?
In this entertaining history of the jetliner, Jay Spenser follows the flow of simple yet powerful ideas to trace aviation's challenges. He introduces us to pioneers across continents and centuries, sheds new insights on their contributions, and evokes those key moments in history when, piece by piece, such innovators as Otto Lilienthal, Igor Sikorsky, Louis Bleriot, Hugo Junkers, and Jack Northrop collectively solved the puzzle of flight.
Along the way, Spenser ... more

White's Aviation : Classic New Zealand aerial photography order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 60.00 each
Paperback
Author: John Sullivan, Ross Ewing & Sarah Ell (photography Whites Aviation)
In Stock: 1
This magnificent book contains a selection of more than 200 images of New Zealand from the air. Taken from the White's Aviation collection at the Alexander Turnbull Library, these images of towns, cities, landforms and events were taken from the 1930s to the 1970s, and show a landscape still familiar in some cases and changed beyond recognition in others. These stunning black and white images represent an important phase in New Zealand's aviation, aerial photography and publishing industries, and are fascinating to look at. They combine historical interest with that natural curiosity of seeing recognisable landforms and places from a completely different perspective. The selection of images is accompanied by historical background on aviation pioneer Leo White and his company, the history of aerial photography and the White's Aviation publishing phenomenon.

Here, within one book, is a comprehensive and authoritative survey of man's attempts to design, develop and mass-produce airplanes and rotorcraft since 1852.
More than 3,000 entries, illustrated with some 1,000 photographs, feature oddball contraptions and their eccentric designers, as well as the big companies whose aircraft have become household names.
So, along with big organizations like Grumman, Messerschmitt, Supermarine and Sikorsky, are the enthusiasts who built a single machine in their backyard or, like V.B. Shavrov, in their tiny one-bedroom apartment!
Global in scope, this new edition reflects the fundamental changes that have occurred in the aviation industry since the turn of the millennium. Each entry indicates the nationality of the company or individual concerned; while it may not come as much of a surprise to see the USA, France, the UK and Germany heading the league table of countries with the most ... more

Paperback
Author: John Wright
In Stock: 1
The FJ Holden. It's an unmistakable, much loved and unique symbol of Australia - right up there with the pavlova, Don Bradman's baggy green, or Christmas on the beach. But how did it get this way? Exactly how did an American car company so accurately grasp Australia's automotive pulse to create a car that is now an Australian motoring icon?Right from the beginning, Holden understood the importance of brand, the need to create 'a car for every purse and purpose'. The advent of the FJ Holden, seen as 'Australia's Own Car', revolutionised Australian automobility. Australians clamoured for the Holden not just because it was a (relatively) affordable car but because it was seen as symbolic of the new post-war era of increasing prosperity. Holden now enjoys a unique, iconic status in the automotive culture of Australia. In this fascinating book - part social history, part corporate history, part biography of a car - Wright tracks the elements ... more

The New Zealand Curriculum identifies the Key Competency of thinking in terms of creative, critical, and meta-cognitive processes. These types of thinking are used to make sense of information, experiences, and ideas, to create knowledge, to make decisions, to question and to solve problems. Top Tools for Literacy and Thinking provides teachers with the tools to encourage these types of thinking in their students and so stimulate intellectual curiosity, which is at the heart of this competency.

The book takes a similar approach to previous ones in this series (Top Tools for Teaching Thinking, 2004 and Top Tools for Literacy and Learning, 2001) but in this one tools are linked to specific text types, making it more focussed and at the same time broader in its appeal.

Author: Richard Hammond

Richard Hammond has had a longstanding love affair, bordering on the obsessive some might say, with caravans. He has researched their origins and history, celebrity owners, the uses to which they have been put, their place in history, names, jargon, games with, things to do in, recipes to cook in and future of. He also gives sound practical advice on how to use them to best advantage, race them (ensuring first they are of the non-static variety), and how to destroy them in interesting ways (of which he has much experience - 80 or so at the last count). An essential guide for any owner or prospective owner or indeed anyone with even a passing interest in caravans, of whatever sex or age, or race, or inclination. Or even perhaps someone with apparently no interest in caravans who might have a previously latent interest aroused. Some even talk in hushed tones of a parallel universe, though he has no personal experience of this, yet. ... more
